Regarding the "access denied" error, I've notice that a Mac user would need to use "domain\username" when logging in on a Windows machine, but can simply use "username" when logging in on a Mac machine. I know both Apple and Microsoft are working to bridge this gap, but issues still exist that make troubleshooting Sharepoint problems on a Mac very difficult. In general, though, Mac's don't like to function nicely in a Windows environment. For our Mac users that are assigned as site collection administrators, we've opted for the VMWARE/Vista/Office2007 route to handle the procedures that need to be performed. Regarding URLS, I have seen that Mac's cannot handle a web app Host Header like Mac's need a FQDN like. Some of the problems have been alleviated by switching to Firefox, but core functionality in dealing with documents and rich-text content still remains a problem. We have a few Mac users that encountered this same issue.
Maybe it's a bit slow, but I haven't noticed a loss in functionality. Safari on Windows Vista Business with SP1 works fine for me as the Sharepoint Admin. Since Safari has been the main browser for the Mac, many have associated these problems with the browser instead of the underlying OS. And since Mac's do not run ACTIVE X controls, as noted in other posts, many of the basic Sharepoint functions are not available on a Mac. We run WSS 3.0 SP2 and MOSS2007 SP2 and have discovered that Macintosh computer's generally have a difficult time dealing with Active Directory and Windows Authentication. I'd suspect the browser settings rather than cookies. It might well have something to do with him entering the wrong name/password isn't he even getting a far as the name/password box ? Your second question is a completely different one Typically also Admins will have times when they need a copy of IE and a PC. for multi-line edit boxes where in Safari I'd need to write HTML code. Mostly that is started if I am using colours / bold etc. I have the above mentioned views set-up so I can edit even v2 items but otherwise I rarely have things for which I need to start up my Vista machine.

In my free time I mostly use Safari on a MacBook. Firefox is rarely left for the v3 site however. I also need to run two copies of IE (6) for two different v2 sites in order for instance to be able to edit items by using a dropdown - in Firefox I would need to have a special view with an edit button. I use Firefox on an XPPro (for both v2 and v3 sites) as my main browser at work. Drop-downs work for instance to a certain extent in connection with a v3 site. The basic principle is that support from non-IE browsers is much better for the v3 SharePoint products than for the v2 products.
